Pathway 1, Subject 5

Goals of Care *REDACTED*

Solution: FRED HOLLOWS

Solves: 52 Guesses: 66

This puzzle is based off Redactle, one of the online puzzles spawned in the aftermath of Wordle. The premise is that a random Wikipedia page is redacted every day, and solvers have to guess words to slowly un-redact the page. The objective is to guess the page's subject.

For this specific puzzle, the page starts completely redacted. Clicking on a redacted word will reveal its word-length, which is also a Redactle feature. Good places to start would be guessing various medical words (as this is a medical Puzzle Hunt after all) and simple words like "the", "Australia" etc. Eventually we reveal enough to realise the subject is FRED HOLLOWS, a pioneering ophthalmologist known for his efforts to prevent blindness.

This puzzle's creation was a last-minute decision made the night before MDSC Puzzles launched (ie. Sunday 22/06)! It arose because a (non-UniMelb) solver, to whom I had recently introduced to Redactle, mentioned on Sunday they were looking forward to the Redactle puzzle. Realising I hadn't actually written any Redactle puzzles, I scrambled to hack together a working Redactle clone in the early hours of the morning.

The original implementation required a webpage reload on each guess, which was probably quite annoying. Sorry about this! Midway through the week I updated the code such that it didn't need a webpage reload on each guess. As a result the guessing and word-revealing process is a lot smoother now.
