Solution: SEX ON THE BEACH

The instructions for preparing the Kings Cup references several cocktails. Simply following the instructions by tracking the ingredients as per the International Bartenders Association. The below table lists the composition of the Kings Cup after each step.

(We have left out unimportant ingredients like water, ice cube etc. Also note that we used 5mL as the volume of a teaspoon.)

The final drink contains 40mL orange juice, 40mL vodka, 40mL cranberry juice and 20mL peach schnapps, which is the composition of the SEX ON THE BEACH cocktail.

This puzzle was inspired by a random clip in my YouTube recommendations from Casino Royale where Bond foregoes his usual dry martini (shaken, not stirred) for a Vesper martini (named after his love interest in this film). As a result of Ian Fleming’s popularisation of the Vesper martini in his novel Casino Royale (published in 1953), the Vesper is now an IBA official cocktail. While I tried my hardest to include it in this puzzle, it was ultimately too difficult (given its use of a rather unique ingredient in Kina Lillet, which, to my knowledge, is no longer even produced anymore…); I did however manage to sneak a Casino cocktail into this puzzle as a nod to the inspiration behind this puzzle.

If you thought this puzzle was a pain in the neck to solve, it was an even greater pain to write, that’s for sure. This puzzle comfortably took over a 20x20 chunk of my spreadsheet and was effectively just a whole bunch of very questionable maths. I checked over this puzzle three or four times and still was not convinced that I had made no mistakes in my maths!

ADDENDUM: I did indeed make a mistake with this puzzle… :( Special shout-out to Tory who pointed it out in the feedback — in the penultimate step, I asked solvers to “remove any citrus juice that may remain”. I thought this would be a good way to hint at removing the 60mL of grapefruit juice contributed by Sea Breeze without giving the game away but, in my haste, totally forgot that orange juice also counts as citrus juice! Well done to Tory for picking me up on that one — nobody else seems to have mentioned this oversight thus far.
