Chemotherapy

Solution: TUMOUR LYSIS

These chemotherapy regimens are clues pointing towards actual chemo regimens, which are documented very well in eviQ. Once we work out which chemo regimen it is, we use the "Cycle" number to pick out the drug from the list, and the "Day" number to index into that drug to extract a letter.

For example, in the first clue, "TEN" clues for the regimen 7+3, composed of the drug cytarabine and daunorubicin (or another anthracycline). The "C1" tells us to take the former of these two, and the "D3" tells us to take the third letter, which is T. Continuing as follows:

Clue Chemotherapy regimen Constituent agents Letter
TEN (C1D3) 7+3 CYTARABINE / daunorubicin T
GRAIN (C1D4) RICE RITUXIMAB / ifosfamide / carboplatin / etoposide U
GRIN (C2D1) SMILE dexamethasone / METHOTREXATE / ifosfamide / peg-asparagase / etoposide M
KARATE-MOVE (C4D10) CHOP cyclophosphamide / doxorubicin / vincristine / PREDNISOLONE O
PENNANT (C1D3) FLAG FLUDARABINE / cytarabine / filgrastim U
PORT (C2D5) CVAD cyclophosphamide / VINCRISTINE / doxorubicin / dexamethasone R
POLICE-AD? (C4D4) BEACOPP bleomycin / etoposide / doxorubicin / CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE L
STEP (C3D2) PACE cisplatin / doxorubicin / CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE / etoposide Y
A-LISTER (C2D4) VIP etoposide / IFOSFAMIDE / cisplatin S
CONTROL-BULL? (C2D5) CAPOX capecitabline / OXALIPLATIN I
TIME-PERIOD (C2D7) EPOCH etoposide / PREDNISOLONE / vincristine / cyclophosphamide / doxorubicin S

This yields TUMOUR LYSIS as the answer, which is dangerous side-effect of chemotherapy!

Author's notes

Author: Dan

I am currently on a haematology rotation and have to deal with complex chemotherapy regimens nearly every day. eviQ is an absolute lifeline as it allows me to quickly check days of chemotherapy delivery and dosing of chemotherapy too. Therefore, I thought I ought to dedicate a puzzle to this valuable resource.

I also quite enjoyed the clue POLICE-AD? to clue for “BEACOPP” (i.e. “be a cop”) — while it does not strictly conform due to the extra “P”, I thought it was too funny to not include. Sorry to the sticklers out there!
